University of Cyprus · January 2027

Greek A2 for the Cyprus certificate exam.

The next University of Cyprus certificate sitting includes A2. Long-term resident status names Greek at A2. One highly skilled naturalisation route does too. Ordinary naturalisation requires B1. That route has its own B1 exam page.

The university’s dates

On the School of Modern Greek site, last updated 31 August 2026, registration for the January 2027 exams (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, Nicosia, 11–29 January 2027) opens on 2 November 2026, 09:00 Cyprus time and stays open until 30 November 2026, 23:59 Cyprus time, or until places fill, whichever comes first. The published A2 fee is €90, the same as A1 and B1. B2, C1, and C2 are €100. The fee is paid to the university through JCC. It is non-refundable, a candidate cannot be replaced, and the application counts only after the payment succeeds. Course attendance is not required. Exams are held only at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia.

The exact A2 day, time, and room inside 11–29 January 2027 are not published. The school emails them to each candidate after registration closes. The school’s general calendar also has a sitting in the first half of September. September 2027 dates, places, and the registration window are not on the page yet. The school says those details go up about two months before the period.

Who the A2 certificate is for

Long-term resident status

Article 18Θ of the Aliens and Immigration Law, Cap. 105, lets a third-country national who has lived legally in the government-controlled areas for the last five years acquire long-term resident status. One of the conditions is sufficient Greek at CEFR A2, together with basic elements of the contemporary political and social reality of Cyprus. The Immigration Control Committee may, in exceptional cases, exempt an applicant from that language and knowledge condition.

That status is not a permanent residence permit. On 19 October 2026 the Migration Department’s long-term residence page described the residence rules and a €30 application fee. It did not name the University of Cyprus A2 certificate as the document that proves the language condition. Confirm the accepted paper with the department before you rely on it.

Naturalisation

Ordinary naturalisation, form M127, requires Greek at B1. In the ten years before the final twelve months of continuous residence, the ordinary route asks for at least seven years of legal residence.

Article 111B(2) is different. For highly skilled employment at companies named in Cabinet Decision 92.018 of 15 October 2021, and for their family members, Greek may be A2 or B1. With A2, legal residence in those ten years is at least four years. With B1, it is at least three. The company list and the salary and job tests are on the Ministry of Interior page. Do not treat A2 as enough for every citizenship file.

For naturalisation, Minister of Interior order KDP 402/2024 names the papers that count at A2 and at B1. They include an Ellinomatheia success certificate, the old Ministry of Education A2 exam held until 2023, the old Ministry B1 exam held until 2022, a University of Cyprus School of Modern Greek exam certificate, and a course-completion certificate from that same school. The two University of Cyprus papers must each be accompanied by a confirmation carrying the school’s original stamp. Our lessons are not that course, and we do not issue either paper.

The Public Service Commission and the Educational Service Commission accept School of Modern Greek certificates at B2, C1, and C2. They do not accept A2.

What the A2 exam contains

The school’s A2 structure sheet gives each skill 25 units. The written papers are two hours in total. Speaking is separate.

  • Reading, 40 minutes. Three or four everyday texts. True or false, matching sentences, multiple choice with four options, and gap-fill.
  • Listening, 25 minutes, and it is the first paper. Three or four audio texts. True or false, matching a description to images, gap-fill, notes, and multiple choice with three options.
  • Writing, 55 minutes. Part A is a friendly text or a description, 80–100 words. Part B is a more formal text, such as an invitation, a thank-you letter, or congratulations, also 80–100 words. Do not write your real name in the writing.
  • Speaking, 15 minutes per pair. Part A is getting-to-know-you questions. Part B is a short monologue or a picture description. Part C is a role play. There is no preparation time, except one or two minutes in part C to read the roles.

The regulations updated on 26 August 2026 say a candidate must have reached 16. A certificate needs 60% in each of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Missing one skill means no certificate. Use of Language is examined only at B2, C1, and C2. The certificate shows a score from 0 to 100.

Two official texts do not use the same clock. The general page says independent-exam results come within two months of the exam date, and a grade review (€60, non-refundable) must be filed within one month of the results. The score may stay the same, rise, or fall. The 26 August 2026 regulations say results are notified within two and a half months after the session, and a re-evaluation must be filed within ten days, still at €60, with the outcome within two months. Only one application is allowed, and it is final. This page does not choose between them.

Certificates are collected by appointment at 65 Kallipoleos Street, 1071 Nicosia, second floor, or posted at the candidate’s cost. A reissue costs €10 and is allowed once. The certification office listed on the school’s page is smgcertification@ucy.ac.cy, +357 22 892030.

A separate 45-minute multiple-choice exam covers basic elements of the contemporary political and social reality of Cyprus. Already near A2

The A2 group is Mondays and Wednesdays at 20:00, from 1 December 2026. Eight lessons will not invent an A2 from nothing. They are a sprint: past and future, an errand, and a short text of the kind the writing paper asks for. Sit the placement test if you are not sure.

Starting from A1

Beginners should not book January as a finish line. A1 meets at 19:00, same days, from 1 December 2026. B1, the level ordinary naturalisation requires, meets at 21:00. Use this term to build toward a later sitting.

€180 locked until 30 November

Enrol by 30 November 2026 and the eight-lesson pack stays €180, paid once. That is €22.50 a lesson, €20 less than eight separate lessons at €25. One group lesson is €25. Private 1:1 is €45. Groups are 4–6 students, 50 minutes, online. The same price covers A2 preparation and, if you move up, B1. Sending two or more people from the same firm? The pack is €160 per person, invoiced after we place the group. Corporate rate.

Ordinary naturalisation needs B1. B1 pack · €180 · B1 exam page.

Questions

Will these lessons get a beginner through the January 2027 A2 exam?

No. The December A2 group is a short sprint for people already close to A2. Beginners start in A1 and aim at a later University of Cyprus sitting. The school also holds exams in the first half of September. The September 2027 dates are not on the school’s page yet.

Do you issue the A2 certificate?

No. The certificate comes from the School of Modern Greek at the University of Cyprus, after you register and sit their exam. We teach the Greek. The published A2 fee is €90, paid to the university through JCC, not to us.

Is A2 enough for Cyprus citizenship?

Ordinary naturalisation requires Greek at B1. A2 is the level named for long-term resident status, and for one highly skilled naturalisation route: four years of legal residence with A2, or three years with B1. Confirm your own route before you book an exam.

What does the €180 pack include?

Eight group lessons, paid once, at €22.50 a lesson. Enrol by 30 November 2026 and that price stays €180. One lesson on its own is €25. Private 1:1 is €45. The same groups prepare for A2 now and for B1 if you continue.

Where are the lessons, and when is the A2 exam?

Lessons are online, Cyprus time, Mondays and Wednesdays. A1 at 19:00, A2 at 20:00, B1 at 21:00, from 1 December 2026. The university exam is in Nicosia, somewhere in 11–29 January 2027. The exact A2 day, time, and room are not published; the university emails them after registration.
